i can't believe~ EXO
How I got into EXO: blooming days + power + universe is the actual sequence, sometime in the summer. also helps that i am driven by spite and wanted to support the band that ACTUALLY DESERVES RECOGNITION FOR THEIR SKILLS, once i found out they could actually sing. although not exactly dance while performing.

like honestly. it really did start in march, while i was abroad. it was weird. i didn't actually watch the olympic perf until about 10 days ago, but i did find it both boggling and flabbergasted that this group, which i specifically designated as offlimits, were/had reached some real milestones. WEIRD FEELINGS. i kept it inside for as long as i could, until i watched power mv and was cursed, hard. i ate my words and borders as i fell for the simple reverb rock ballad of universe and its imagery.
XIUMIN – 시우민 – March 26, 1990 is the first one i gravitated towards, because he dances well enough, can sing, and generally looks very good in the blooming days mv. his eyes are VERY pretty to me, and he gets great make up often, eye make up. helps that i knew him from their exo-m days. his character in the power mv had a kitty cat grin of cleverness that i liked, even though it resulted him getting blown up in a cartoon manner. apparently really likes coffee. possibly their smallest person, but it might be suho. idk.
betraydol 2: LUHAN – 루한 – April 20, 1990 i don't know anything about him except that he left on comparatively good terms from exo. has nothing to do with lu han: i am still crying over his story in the fic, curledupkitten's the touchline.
betraydol 1: KRIS – 크리스 – November 6, 1990, NEVER UNDERSTOOD HIS APPEAL. SO UGLY, SUCH HEIGHT I GUESS?? whose music matches the word awfulistenable, i am told. somehow got uglier post sm. also pointy, like sehun.
SUHO – 김준 면 – May 22, 1991 is boringly handsome with a pretty voice. I REALLY LIKE HIS VOICE. he's like a small, pretty version of a no-ps siwon? i saw these clips of him getting hit in the face by toys during concerts. him getting his shirt lifted. him getting teased in general. honestly, seems like what delusional onew stans think of onew, but an actual real leader who (passively) aggressively looks after his groupmates. i really liked selected translation bits of his speech from the sm series of lectures. he gets major points too for giving cultural assistance to our amber. a Good Egg.
LAY – 레이 – October 7, 1991 their most powerful dancer, conspicuously missing. i love him and kai during monster's choreography. a sleepy and calm looking man who ranked at no.4 in the CCP's celebrity social ranking thing. an ambitious figure. i find him beautiful and very dangerous, lmao. he's best at that 'reflecting-back-at-you-what-you-want' thing that celebs do. his eng/chn album NAMANANA is really fun. the secondary character in that mv is a priority parcel. ((YOU KNOW ME, a sucker for anything that references the mail.)) he seems like he's into absurdist humor. Sheep mv was full of Choices. the fact that he only realized over ten years later, that he never actually named his cat was hilarious.
BAEKHYUN – 백현 – May 6, 1992 the boy version of taeyeon. (oops but now that i kinda know him I LIKE THE IDEA OF THEM TOGETHER. i am sorry.) the one other person who gets great eyemakeup. his voice is scratchy, slightly nasally, and easier to identify because of its distinct timbre. he seems to have megatons of fans, and because of his energetic nature, it makes him somewhat polarizing. during that famous concert ment clip where he harmonizes BELOW chanyeol's note, i found that impressive. usually it's easier the other way around for most. beagle line.
CHEN – 첸 – September 21, 1992 my favorite singer of the group, hands down. still singing very well. a lovely voice that ranks close but below jjongyeon. idk if he's had any issues with vocal nodules. love his mouth shape, his square jaw, his jacked arms. he def did that racist kuntakinte thing during blooming days promo. beagle line.
CHANYEOL – 박찬열 – November 27, 1992 is ridiculously muscled these days, and even TALLER. huge eyeballs, distinct ears. i like that he opens power, and his playful 'awhooooo yeah' always makes me smile!! whenever he sings i'm surprised. he had a cover of radiohead creep and i was like 'wat u musician omg' weakest dancer along with suho. "rip, even when sehun is lazy, 100%effort!chanyeol still looks worse in comparison." beagle line. the y in sky.
D.O. – 디오 – January 12, 1993 is the korean, ten years younger version of arashi's nino. but tbh idk if nino can even sing. still remember him in goodbye summer and holding that against him for years. i refuse to really get into him because he's very polarizing, with his astigmatism, his flat expressions during perfs, his penchant for shoving his bandmates. the last of which does make me laugh. otherwise, a cute person who can sing, and i am told, act. ornery-seeming. friends with smiley im hyunsik. maybe they're still friends, who knows.
betraydol 3: TAO – 타오 – May 2, 1993 a dramatic person who left in a fit, injured. SAD BECAUSE I LIKED HIM A LOT T__T don't ask why because i can't remember. yet another kittycat smile. a tall one!! but we'll never know now if he's taller or what compared to maknae oh sehun.
KAI – 카이 – January 14, 1994 our lee taemin's good friend. apparently moody and sleepy, and if you give him a plushie there is a closer to 1 chance that he will have torn it to pieces by the end of the interview. a nasally voice, but apparently he has improved a lot in singing less through it. his stage presence has only ever gone up: see the Mr Destiny fancam (181102 EXO COMEBACK SHOWCASE - Tempo KAI (2 Angles Mixed)) that went viral. HE'S WEARING AN AWFUL BUCKET HAT. STILL BILLIONS OF TONS OF JOY WITH EVERY MOTION. also kai/krystal is totally my shit. darkhaired, surly expressioned, gorgeous together. sad they broke up. the k in sky.
SEHUN – 세헌 – April 12, 1994 POINTY BARITONE, a long bean with brows that people envy. sorta sings. rap line. the s in sky. i'm confused about how he's always being called a twink, and because i know next to nothing about him i shall note that here.

-i liked the acapella part!! i like the choreo. the mv was incredibly boring, and didn't really incorporate the motorbikes. MISLED BY AN SM TEASER? OFC. the era styling was underwhelming. they promoted during baseball season, when lots of music shows were pre-recs or cancelled alltogether. they were also in hawaii while the melon music awards were happening, lmao, what a fantastic best-revenge-is-living-well power move.
-stand out tracks are oh la la la, oasis, with you. gravity. well, i like mostly all the songs except damage which is pure noise jfc.
-I LOVE THEIR UNIVERSE MINI. it's seriously very for me. idk. i never knew i would like something like that. the soothing imagery loosed from period references in the mv helped its appeal to me.
-artificial love and monster are great bass heavy songs
-i still like power the best of their promoted songs. i think a part of exo's appeal is that they have a HUGE variety of types in the group, helps that there's nine of them. their music is aggressively male in the way that shinee's music has never, ever been. growl/monster/love me right say hello. taemin's music, i would argue, is more aggressive than shinee's too. that love shot has guns is not in any way appealing to me. just as vixx scentist had guns, i'm just. fuckennnnnnnnn over guns, okay? people are annoyed at the diamond logo. i am still annoyed at their debut date being jonghyun's bday. but it's fine. i'm bitter and i have to move past it.
-like in btob, i don't have a favorite. maybe suho. but that's half because i like fanfic characterizations of the man, lmao, fml.

the chorus is annoying as hell with the nana-ing. it reminds me of (g)i-dle's HANN. fu fu fu fu fu fufufufufufuffuuuuuu; naaaaaanana nananaa. i still hate the guns. but since they're kind of metaphorical and clearly aren't real firearms, visually at least since there is still the sound of a gun cocking (and later in the song, that sound is replaced by the sound a droplet), i'm 'oppa didn't mean it' type of mindset, done, forgiven.

this is dumb but for posterity: since exo are now into their military fragmentation era (and shinee are basically solo taem.......damn.......) it was obvious that sm wants to branch into china for a second reason, the first being RMB RMB RMB: retaining chinese members in a group means constant promotion of an existing group while the korean members are away. like, sure, there's loads of money in japan. but there's eVEN MORE IN THE PRC.
also this is very extremely highly selfish of me but i am devastated by the fuckshit happening in american politics that is destabilizing, well, politics all over the world. at least tr*mp knows that war , while profitable, is extremely unpopular, so i'm hoping that it will continue that way. being an adult is living with the anxiety of a nuclear threat and we do not have thousands of years to condition with dealing with this level of pervasive anxiety. it is dumb but i am worried about these......fckn dudes in the military ...... i should worry about myself, i know.

reminded me of how different that sm station song's genre and sound is from exo's music and the parrot spoiler we heard is very different from exo too
idk what my point is but apart from the music genre and lack of music show performances and who knows what else is in store there's the general weirdness in the air about entertainment the world over tbh imo ((mostly in the usa, with the president being a r*pist reality television star, the entire seungri yg date r*pe prostitution embezzlement unfurling event, the sense that what you choose to entertain yourself with somehow reflects upon your character? is some weird meta that i haven't decided yet if it is or isn't bullshit))
adding to that that each of the solos and units' promos are totally different and unpredictable that they really cannot be compared. minseok's solo station didn't have chart longevity and fans didn't seem to have much to say about it. ksoo's solo station had an ageless picture of him attached to it and he didn't even appear in the mv but it is charting well with zero promo. cbx is cbx, is still releasing music even after one of them is in military hiatus. chen got radio, a few teevee appearances, a busking, over 950k uls on melon. baekhyun got the same one week of promos that chen did, a series of b-t-s clips, a yhy sketchbook appearance. thus far seyeol teased a lot with going to LA etc and their my little television cooking and pets stream. they all got a/are getting a showcase ofc.
chanyeol's his own worst enemy being the competitive type, and gullible and a loudmouth on top of it
i just hope that all of us fans fight as little as possible im tired and i want exo to feel connected and be happy :(

i get that there are people who have forcibly iced themselves toward chanyeol for extremely legitimate reasons. i understand that you want to protect yourself from the very thing that often you, general you, relies upon to reliably evoke happy and cheeful feelings, so that you pre-emptively protect yourself from disappointment. it's clear to me. sometimes it is okay to give your faves the benefit of the doubt, even if they have seldom in the past shown real skill when it comes to singing. if you can talk, you can sing. and everyone, every body every person has art inside of them if it is allowed to be cultivated to shine.
the entire fight about male-gaze in the What A Life mv has got me really down, same with the japan tour dates and miyagi fight. the trump-moon show off of soft power. but along with that we got yixing sending off kyungsoo. we got suho channeling some kjh realness. we got baekhyun solo and music wins, we got chen and d.o. charting strong with iu endorsements, we got concerts and more dates announced, we have sechan. we have a lot.
this album, most of all, makes me wish i had the optimism of men. or even the ability to at TIMES be as optimistic and acting within that capacity.
